Artist Residency. Space for living, making, and exhibiting art.
This hybrid studio, apartment, gallery space was designed with the intention of becoming a residency for the contemporary artist Nick Cave and his partner, nestled into the historic St. Louis neighborhood of Cherokee Street. The overarching considerations evaluated for this project were the assimilation of modern architecture into a primarily historic part of St. Louis and the consideration of scale as it relates to the function of these three spaces. In this project, the gallery is a separate detached building that faces the street, while the apartment is lofted over the studio space that meets the back alleyway. However, these two buildings are connected by an interior courtyard that features “bird cage-like” windows filling in the gallery, studio, and apartment with light.
