This project was an inspired, orthogonal application of the way that it feels to glide and spin across the ice. Starting with field studies of repeated movements taken from various figure skating routines, this “game cube” is a compilation of these movements, broken down into elements. The challenge within this exercise was the reconciliation of a curve within an orthogonal language. Here, the cube’s interaction with light becomes pivotal for conveying the ephemeral and graceful quality of a figure skater. Despite rigid wood elements, this piece comes to life in the way that light and shadow become their own medium, dancing along the wood frame.
